DISCUSSION
The
objective of the experiment is to monitor the how much sound generated from
source and to identify, to record the parameter of noise monitoring at specific
place, time and duration of monitoring and justify how the noise will effect
the workers and the people stopping at the tol. This experiment was done using
Sound Level Meter(SLM). SLM contains a microphone, an amplifier, frequency
response networks and a type of indicating meter. SLM indicates the sound level
pressure in decibels (dB) by measuring the sound pressure level, then
amplifying and scaling it. Noise survey included a visit to a site and the
noise measurement of the noise source was determine. in this monitoring,
TOL SIMPANG AMPAT was the place that we had selected to measure the noise
level. The distance of microphone from the source was 6.8 meter, the height of
the microphone from ground was 1.0 m, the height of source was 1.8 m and the
duration of monitoring was 1 hour per week for 5 weeks. We had chose Wednesday
as the day of monitoring and time of monitoring was between 5-6 p.m. because it
was a weekday and the time of people getting back from working.
Fom 5 weeks of monitoring the noise at the place, the average parameters
was obtain to be presented. First, the data L10 shows the noise level exceeded
for 10% of the time of the measurement duration. This usually is to indicate
the peak noise during that time period. For the average of 5 weeks, the L10
obtained was 74.68 dB. This was maybe because of the slightly heavier traffic
during the evening. Next, L50 is used to indicate the level exceeded 50% of the
time, which statistically indicate noises at the mid-point of the noise reading
(slightly above average for the area), which was recorded an average of 68.18.
After that, L90 is noise level that exceeded for 90% of the time, which
generally represent the ambient or background noise of that area. The average result
for L90 was 61..16 maybe because of the workers and people passing by near the
sound level meter at the area during the period. After that, the average value
of Max dB for this week was 100.22 dB. The value of average Max dB quite high
because of the lots number of heavy oil tankers or trailers passing by during
that time period. Lastly, is the Leq which is actually the Sound Pressure Level
in dB which was also known as average energy emitted throughout the time period
at the location, which for us is at the toll station. So for the Leq the
average value of 5 weeks monitoring was 74.28 dB. By observing at
the result, it shows that the average was below 85 dB. Therefore, the noise
produce is below than the Permissible Noise Exposure Time by Occupational Safety
and Health (OSHA) which stated the limit time exposure for 85 dB was for 8
hours of exposure to noise. This show that the workers and visitors are safe to
works and to stop at the Tol.
As the conclusion, we have achieved the objective of monitoring
the noise pollution at the TOL SIMPANG AMPAT. We had identified the source
generated, record the parameters and justified the safe Permissible
Noise Exposure Time for the workers and visitors.
